Remarkably, inactivation of GC-A in pericytes retarded physiological retinal vascularization and markedly enhanced cell apoptosis, vascular regression, and subsequent neovascularization in oxygen-induced cells as human brain pericytes [5,19,20]. Many previous in vitro models of the BBB involve the use of animal or transformed human pericytes and brain microvascular endothelial cells [21].
